Global Majority is a label we have adopted to refer to those who would otherwise be racialised as an “ethnic minority” in the UK.
Globally “ethnic minorities” represent approximately 80% of the world’s population and so we feel that the way we refer to ourselves should reflect that. We find blanket terms such as “BAME” to be incredibly flattening and disempowering in the way that they erase our distinct ethnicities and cultures, lumping us all into one homogenous group devoid of any kind of difference. We reject these sorts of terms as well as the notion that our existence should be classified in relation to whiteness. While still not perfect, we find “Global Majority” to be much more inclusive, affirming and liberating which makes better space for our diversity and range of identities whilst reminding us of our true position in the world.
We understand and appreciate that there are many people who would not take to this term but until we are aware of one that sits better with us, we are happy as a mixed race group to use it as a welcome signal to would-be friends and beneficiaries of our work.

Global Majority members include those with African, Caribbean, South, East & West Asian (inc “Middle Eastern”) and Latinx hertiage. Our definition also includes those with dual heritage or mixed race identities as well as Black Americans and those indigenous to the Global South.
